welcome back Selko
Ski photographer Jonathan Selkowitz returned home from the FIS World Ski Championships in Sweden in time to catch the biggest dump of the season.
Few people can match his passion for skiing and ski racing. Within an hour of driving into town Friday evening, he had his boards tuned and was on the King for the last hour of lift service under the lights.
Then it was back to more ski racing, documenting 1984 Olympic gold medalist Phil Mahre’s comeback attempt. Mahre, 49, joined hundreds of young ski racers — most born after he retired — competing in the Wild West Classic slalom and giant slalom races on Snow King over the weekend.

Selkowitz has spent much of the winter in Europe, shooting the World Cup tour when there has been enough snow to hold the races. At the World Championships, he captured the memorable image of Jackson Hole native Resi Stiegler sliding on her belly, a photo printed in the sports section of the Feb. 21 News&Guide.
As usual, Selko won’t be home for long. The U.S. Ski Team lensman will rejoin the World Cup tour next month and also travel to Alaska for the U.S. Alpine Championships, where Mahre expects to vie with Bode Miller for the national slalom and GS titles and Stiegler will be chasing her first U.S. crown.
But first he made time for some well-earned powder turns Monday in the southern Tetons, where the snow was light, deep and over the head.
