They’ve got game: The girls rode into town in style to celebrate their win.
All that racket and honking of horns on the Square today was the state champion high school girls’ basketball team returning home from Casper to a heroes’ welcome.
Congratulations to the Lady Broncs and Coach Sean Shockley for winning the school’s first basketball title since 1991.
Nobody is more deserving of the honor than Shockley, who has devoted the better part of his life to youth sports, particularly basketball.
The former Bronc ball boy (as a third-grader) and point guard (placed second and third at state his junior and senior years) has has taken the girls’ team to state six times in seven seasons. Before that, he was an assistant coach for three years and worked for the Parks and Rec sports programs for 13 years.
In addition to working with kids, he has been an inextricable part of the town softball, hoops and flag football leagues, either as player, coach or referee.
He owns a special education degree from the University of Wyoming and now serves as activities director at the high school.
Knowing Shockley, this year’s state championship won’t be his last.
