rally cap
I knew it was a jinx.
On Monday, the New York Mets e-mailed to inform me that I won a lottery for the chance to purchase playoff tickets. The Mets look after their fans in Wyoming.
Alas, the boys at Shea haven’t won a game since. I had no intention of using the tickets, but planned to give them to my brother Shawn and his friends.
I could be holding four worthless pieces of paper.
Gutless Yankee fans, puffed-up pundits and bandwagon doomsayers have piled on as the Mets have staggered through one of the worst implosions in baseball history.
I awoke this morning to an inbox filled with taunting messages.
The N.Y. tabloids have been typically ruthless.
Our pitching staff is in tatters, the bullpen is a disgrace, we can’t get a clutch hit to save our lives, and the baseball gods seem to have turned against us.
But you know what?
It ain’t over.
Sox fans and Cubs fans have been sweating, too. Suddenly the NL playoff race is wide open, with the Rockies — yep, the Rockies — on a rampage and closing fast. Pennant fever has hit the Hole.
After two weeks of grimacing and worrying, I’ve had enough. If my team is going to lose, I’m going down swinging.
Let’s Go Mets!

After last night’s crushing loss, Mets fans can take solace in the poetry of Frank Messina, profiled in today’s NY Times.

“To write about the Mets is to write about losing and knowing how to lose,” Messina said. “That’s what it is to be a Mets fan.”

Gee, Jim,
you don’t seem to be talking about the Jets much anymore !
Maybe that’s the team that needs the rally cap.
The Steelers, by the way, seem to be playing the way they did a couple of years ago.
I forget how that season ended
( no need to drag the lowly Pirates into the comments - everyone knows they are just a
farm club for the rest of the league)

I think I am done watching TV sports this fall.
