About the only thing that might stop the Colorado Rockies at this point is the eight-day layoff before the World Series.
By completing its sweep of Arizona last night, Colorado has won ten straight and 21 of its last 22 — all of them essentially must-win games. We have never seen such a streak of torrid baseball in our lifetimes. Not since the 1936 New York Giants has a team played so spectacularly down the stretch.
No one saw this coming from a franchise that has been up-and-down and directionless for the better part of a decade. In August 2006, I went to a pair of Mets-Rockies games at Coors Field, and Mets fans far outnumbered the Rockies faithful.
Coors Field always has been a pleasant place to watch a baseball game. Seats in the “Rock Pile” center field bleachers cost just $4 during the season; they’ll be going for significantly more when the Series starts next week.
Got to love baseball in Denver in late October, even if a few snowflakes fall during the World Series. Let’s hope the red-hot Rockies aren’t iced by the long layoff.
