in memoriam: Chris Horne

two kind and caring souls

It is with great sadness that I report Chris Horne, a friend and former Jackson resident, died Wednesday in a car crash in Mexico.

Horne was a teacher at the Journeys School, an avid kayaker and skier, a thoughtful and incredibly positive person. He was 34 years old.

His wife, Mandy, was seriously injured in the crash but is recovering at home with family in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Chattanoogan has a story about the accident.

The two left Jackson in August after marrying in June. They planned to start a family in western North Carolina, where Chris had landed a job as principal of a school.

At work or at play, tending to his plants or caring for his cat, Earl, or Mandy’s rottweiler, Sedona, Chris was known for his smile and gentle manner.

little drops of rain

these guns are useless against warming climate

Wednesday was one of those bracing mornings when you walk outside and find it’s a lot colder than you thought.

Snow King was able to make snow round the clock from Tuesday evening to Thursday. Seemed the real cold was here, finally. No more messing around.

Disco Cubin! The tributes to outgoing U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo., keep pouring in.

Here, from readers in Casper and Cheyenne, is a compilation of more of Cubin’s greatest hits, annotated where applicable.

From an excellent article in Slate, 4/15/03:

Victoria’s Secret
Cubin once startled a group of GOP donors during a speech on energy policy by interjecting, “I know what Victoria’s Secret is. She’s a slut.”

ding, dong …

ain't she lovely? The Wicked Witch of the West is done.

More than a few glasses were clinked in celebration this weekend after U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin announced that she will not seek re-election.

Thus ends a reign of error that began in 1994 and included such lowlights as:

Endorsing the slaughter of bison in Yellowstone National Park

Supporting a plan to sell off public lands to developers

Calling the $425 billion national deficit a “bookkeeping problem

Blaming former President Bill Clinton for the 9/11 attacks

And, of course, threatening to slap wheelchair-bound Libertarian Thomas Rankin following a 2006 debate
