take a giant step with blues maestro Taj Mahal soul singer Susan Tedeschi, wife of Derek Trucks

From Aaron Davis in the Planet, we learn that Taj Mahal, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi will join Emmylou Harris at the 4th annual Targhee Fest on July 18-20.

A quick search of Pollstar finds that Béla Fleck and Sam Bush are headlining the Targhee Bluegrass Fest on Aug. 8-10.

Also headed our way, to Center for the Arts, are the Neville Brothers and Dr. John (June 10), Del McCoury (June 22) and Leo Kottke (Oct. 18), among others.

And there are rumblings that Widespread Panic will return to Snow King.

Gives us plenty to look forward to, while making plans for Jazz Fest.

legendary funk drummer Buddy Miles

I was saddened, but not surprised, to hear of the passing of Buddy Miles this morning. The drummer for Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana died at his home in Austin, Texas, at 60 years old.

Miles played drums on Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland and was best known as a member of the guitarist’s Band of Gypsys.

Jon Pareles of The New York Times writes,

Mr. Miles played with a brisk, assertive, deeply funky attack that
made him an apt partner for Hendrix. With his luxuriant Afro and his American-flag shirts, he was a prime mover in the psychedelic blues-rock of the late 1960’s, not only with Hendrix but also as a
founder, drummer and occasional lead singer for [Mike Bloomfield's]
the Electric Flag.

Miles also played with Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, John McLaughlin, Stevie Wonder, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, Merl Saunders, Gregg Allman and Phish during his career, as well as his own Buddy Miles Express.

In recent years he performed often at the Mangy Moose and Knotty Pine, despite severe health problems. “Music is all I’ve ever done,” he told me in a December 2000 interview. “I’ve relied on brute strength, continuity, spontaneity — all those nice things that keep the music focused.”

He mused on how commercialism in the music industry mirrored larger ills in society. “These days, especially in life, it’s what you got and how much you got,” Miles said. “You’re not measured on true grit.”

He summed up his approach to his craft thusly: “For as long as I can, I will do whatever it takes to keep the good in perspective for the betterment of all people.”

Spoken like a man with true grit.
