Banyan back; Targhee adds Lyle

By Jim Stanford on March 6, 2008

We interrupt the political coverage for a quick flash of music news.

First, Banyan, the art-jazz-fusion group fronted by trumpeter Willie Waldman, returns to the Mangy Moose in Teton Village tonight. Joining the band on bass is local boy made good, Andy Calder.

Also, Grand Targhee has added Lyle Lovett to close out its Targhee Fest on July 20.

Calder, who anchors a half-dozen local groups, joined the Banyan tour in Salt Lake City last night and will head up to Montana for a couple more gigs this weekend.

The longtime bassist and music promoter was the catalyst for last winter’s smoking jam session between Banyan and Fat Albert at 43 North.

Rounding out the lineup for tonight is drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction, Porno for Pyros), guitarist Brian Jordan (Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe) and painter Norton Wisdom, who creates fantastical images over a light board on stage.

Banyan is a wild foray into free-form improvisation. Admission is $15.

The addition of Lovett to the Targhee lineup is bound to elicit squeals. The Texas crooner had the women swooning when he performed at Targhee two summers ago.

With Emmylou Harris and Taj Mahal, this year’s lineup might be the best yet.
