the madness begins

playing it safe with UNC as champion

Time for tip-off. Hello, heart-stopping basketball. Goodbye, productivity.

I’m always excited for the first weekend of the NCAA tourney. What I’m not excited about: commercials, and the commentary of Billy Packer.

The Bradshaw pool has a record 211 entries. Tim gives us a nice history of the pool, including a reference to a story I wrote about him for the Jackson Hole News in 2000. Hard to believe in this age of live blogging, but Tim was ahead of the curve in putting his pool online.

I also opted to enter the Brew Pub contest, mainly because it has a prize for last place — a distinction I’ve been in the running for the last few years.

It used to be that the only thing you could expect in the NCAA tournament is the unexpected. But last year’s dance was mostly a snoozer, save for VCU’s upset of Duke.

Will North Carolina choke again this year? Can Georgia and Pitt continue their late-season surges? Will we be marvelously entertained by obscure teams like the Drake Bulldogs and Portland State Vikings?

I haven’t a clue. But I can guarantee we’ll be serenaded with “This Is Our Country,” bombarded with beer and fast food ads, and annoyed by Billy Packer. Let there be upsets to make it bearable.

Duke dodged a missile. Belmont played great.

    Forget Duke. Go Davidson!
