Staff at Colorado National Monument used a crane Thursday to haul this 1987 Dodge van out of a canyon. The van had been teetering on the rock, 170 feet above the valley, since Jan. 21, when Daniel J. Lyons, 34, of Grand Junction, Colo., is alleged to have driven off a cliff in an apparent attempt to kill himself.

After trying to expunge the name in an embarrassing p.r. move in 2003, Targhee has embraced Marys Nipple at last.

After trying to expunge the name in 2003, Grand Targhee has come around to embracing Mary's Nipple, named for a former Trap Bar waitress.

A quick daily roundup as we prepare for the Buzzsaw Bowl:

Tramformation Day

Tramformation Day

• The N.Y. Times takes a ride on the new $31 million Jackson Hole Aerial Tram. A starring role goes to Spencer Rank, 100-day diehard and ski tuning artisan at Pepi Stiegler Sports.

“Mr.” Rank speaks of his displeasure at the old tram’s decommissioning:

“I was not happy. Part of why I came here was the tram. I thought about moving.”

Also making cameos: J.K., Chuck Melichar, Edie Thys Morgan, The Snaz.

Clif Bars part of peanut recall

By Jim Stanford on January 29, 2009

Peanut crunch may not be the treat you need right now.

Peanut crunch may not be the treat you need right now.

At first we thought the salmonella peanut butter scare was limited to those snack crackers we feed kids, and other truck stop treats.

Turns out there’s a rather extensive, and scary, list of foodstuffs being recalled.

Included on the list are certain batches of Clif Bars, the preferred energy fix of many Jackson Hole workout hounds.

Click here to see which “Best Used By” dates are affected.

Although I suspect the chances of getting sick from a Clif Bar are minimal, it’s yet another reason to eat locally made, organic, wholesome Tram Bars instead!

What had been a sleepy season of music at the Moose got a jolt of Louisiana lightning last night as Marc Broussard and his band visited.

Proudly sporting the fleur-de-lis, Broussard, who is from Carencro, a small town outside Lafayette, La., played a kickin’ set of swamp rock that had even a bar full of baby boomers boogeying.

The group moved through rhythm and blues and showed it can get funky, too. One of the highlights was an extended cover of The Meters’ “He Bite Me,” on which each of the musicians took a turn breathing fire.

LMC invites community to pARTicipate

LMC art gallery in Jackson, Wyo.

Lyndsay McCandless jokes with David Stubbs at the opening for Andrea Broyles, February 2008.

Lyndsay and David Stubbs at the Andrea Broyles opening, February 2008.

These are challenging times for selling art.

Making art? Perhaps the climate is more conducive.

Even as she feels the squeeze of a sputtering economy, the proprietress of our favorite Jackson art gallery, Lyndsay McCandless, continues to nurture creativity, opening her space to local artists and combining music with visual works.

The art world is taking note. Southwest Art magazine this month named McCandless an “essential art person to know” for 2009, commending her for the gallery’s strong green ethic. The honor comes on the heels of McCandless winning the 2008 Award for Creativity from the Cultural Council of Jackson Hole.

snowmobiler outruns avalanche

By Jim Stanford on January 27, 2009

There are a lot of things I hope to one day understand — HTML, Arabic, what women want — but high-marking is not one of them.

This video was posted about a week ago on YouTube. The subject was identified as a “long time snowmobiling veteran in the Jackson Hole, WY Area.”

I don’t know how you become a “long time” veteran by running a 500- or 600-pound sled up a mountain practically daring it to slide on you, but we all get lucky, I guess.

There is no doubting this:

“I got a hell of a video of that.”
