spare us: Cheney plans Wyoming retirement

DHS raises alert to "orange" for Cheney hunting trips.

Those of us for whom Jan. 20 can’t come fast enough have a bitter pill to swallow: While Dick Cheney may be preparing to leave Washington, to the world’s relief, he is coming home to Wyoming, to Jackson Hole’s horror.

“I have a lot of rivers to fish,” Cheney told CBS Radio yesterday, sending shudders down the spines of peace-loving anglers everywhere.

Cheney won’t exactly be returning to a hero’s welcome in Teton County, which has seen a surge in Democratic Party registration since his election in 2000 and has supported the Democratic ticket in the last two presidential races. When Cheney vacationed in Jackson Hole in August, he was greeted by several billboard-size Obama signs across the street.

Cheney and his wife, Lynne, own a home in the Teton Pines Country Club valued at approximately $3 million. But they also own a $2.7 million home in St. Michaels, Md., on the Chesapeake Bay — in the same neighborhood as Donald Rumsfeld, whose estate, no joke, is aptly named Mount Misery.

Surely it would be better to keep these two pals in a close vicinity when it’s time to slap the cuffs on them.

Instead, Jackson Hole, an outlaws’ hideout since the pioneer days, soon will be harboring a war criminal.

“I’m actually a warm, lovable sort,” Cheney said during the CBS interview.

More than a few folks had been holding out hope that Cheney would retire to a warmer climate. The coast is nice this time of year, Dick, really.

    man, i hate that guy.

  2. Suzy Kneeland January 8, 2009 11:49 pm

No No NOOOOOOO! Creepiest man on Earth, and worst neighbor ever! (and I have some pretty crappy neighbors)

I can’t wait for the Blackhawk helicopters lingering overhead while Cheney fishes the rest of his life away while America’s sons and daughters die in his BULLSHIT, ILLEGITIMATE wars. What a creep!

  3. Nosey January 9, 2009 1:30 am

As a neighbor to the Vice President of the USA you should enlighten us. Just how bad of a guy is he?

  4. Mike V January 9, 2009 12:53 pm

    Hey Nosey,

He’s one of the worst people on the planet! What, have you been living in a box for the last 8 years?

  5. Nosey January 9, 2009 4:16 pm

Yes I live in a box, It`s fun and am aware of his accomplishments as VP, however my question to suzy(who I assume lives in the Pines) was… what kind of terrible things have the Cheney residents done to the Kneeland residents? water boarding, brazin bull, the rack.

  6. Suzy Kneeland January 9, 2009 4:53 pm

I live close to the Pines. He’s actually a relative, and his granddaughter is very nice and polite, but we could probably make a river of blood for him to fly fish in with all the people who have died from his war that had nothing to do with 9-11 or Osama Bin Laden. I have neighbors who park in my spot I shovel out every night when I go home, but at least they haven’t been self serving, war privatizing, corporate war machine, oil and gas developers causing illegitimate wars. That’s what I mean about terrible neighbors. Not to mention the noise from the helicopters every time the big Dick wants to go fly fishing.

  7. evildoer January 9, 2009 6:09 pm

Is it legal for us to tell him to “go f*ck himself” and flip him the bird? How about yelling “war criminal!” when I see him? If any one knows the legality of insulting the former VP, inquiring minds want to know. I am suprised he would want to retire in a county that voted against him. As for Cheney fans and apologists: If you believe that Cheney’s policies were wise and beneficial, perhaps you should enlist and go “protect our freedom” in Iraq. I am amazed at how many pro-war people are too cowardly to practice what they preach.

  8. DAVE January 9, 2009 6:42 pm

given the circumstances that the bush cheney admin inherited from ALL previous admins and jihadists worldwide, i feel we as americans were fortunate to have leaders able to make tough decisions. war is a terrible thing but most of our actions were in response to atrocities committed by extremists against us. our country has been secure from terrorists attacks since 9/11. i only hope that obama/ biden will make tough decisions as needed to keep our country safe . i will be pulling for the new admin as all of should. VP mr cheney is a patriot, a public servant, and deserves respect even if you disagree with his politics. a little tolerance ,respect should replace the vile hatred of this website.

  9. Suzy Kneeland January 9, 2009 7:31 pm

It was legal for Cheney to tell Patrick Leahy to go f*ck himself, so it’s only fair for us to be able to as well. I have flipped him the bird when he’s driven past me before, and given him both thumbs down. Nobody has arrested me for it yet. I do bite my tongue around his grandchildren though…they are still innocent. I hear he’s going to hang out in Casper any way…he’s got more friends there than he does here.

  10. Jim Stanford January 9, 2009 10:40 pm

    @David:

My tolerance ran out a long time ago.

Think we’re in economic trouble now? Too bad we don’t have $1 trillion or more to spend after we squandered it in a phony war that has made the problems you allude to with jihadists only worse.

Dick Cheney and his cronies Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, Rove, Bush, et al ran roughshod over our Constitution, tortured innocent people as well as prisoners, made our country less safe and terrorized American citizens to give up their liberties and accept a state of perpetual war.

They have disgraced our country. They are not patriots. They are traitors.

Dick Cheney and his administration soon will be discarded in the trash can of history, appropriately labeled “worst ever.”

  11. Matthew Taylor January 9, 2009 11:36 pm

Rapper Mac Dre put it best when he said, “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.”

Truth is, post-1/20/9, the Bush/Cheney bashing is going to get old, maybe not amongst my friends in Jackson Hole, but most Americans will grow tired of Olbermann-type rants. Regardless of opinions of ‘worst ever’ — I encourage my fellow Jacksonians to find ways to work our way out of the various messes we share…

Continued attempts to label it “Bush’s War” ignore the fact that come noon on January 20th, President Barack Obama will be our new Commander-in-Chief while Bush boards his plane for Dallas and Cheney for Jackson — that’s the reality of the situation.

Whether it’s peace in the middle east or our growing unemployment — what Obama talks about repeatedly is ‘One America’, Republicans and Democrats alike, coming together to restore our country to greatness. I’m eager to hear thoughts on how we move beyond criticisms and get our country back on track. -matthew taylor********

  12. js January 10, 2009 12:11 am

re: coming together and moving on – agreed, generally. somehow my fuse got lit there.

but I’m not about to let DC off the hook for the disasters he leaves behind.

  13. evildoer January 10, 2009 7:03 am

Dave- have you been asleep for the past eight years? The Iraq War had NOTHING to do with 9/11. Jesus Fucking Christ, when will brainwashed republicans stop blaming outside forces and admit that the Iraq war was a complete disaster which killed thousands of innocent civilians. The reasons given by Cheney for going to war were all LIES! He’s a WARCRIMINAL and should be in prison. Once again, if you think the war in Iraq was a good idea, THEN YOU SHOULD BE OVER THERE FIGHTING IT!!!!

  14. DAVE January 10, 2009 9:23 am

come on people, lets raise the level of discourse here. lets hear some ideas that will help resolve these international problems. the admin is changing,,, how are we going to resolve muslim extremist hatred of the USA.these people are making a living figuring a way to kill . it started long before bush/cheney. lets hear some ideas not just far removed whining.
and yes i served 6 years in the military thankfully during peacetime.

  15. evildoer January 10, 2009 12:04 pm

Well Dave- Yes, thank God the administration is changing. We are definitely not going to resolve muslim extremist hatred against us by waging war against muslim nations for no reason. One group actually doing something to improve relations is the Bozeman based Central Asia Institute which builds schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Read the book “Three Cups of Tea” if interested. Books not Bombs.

  16. Suzy Kneeland January 10, 2009 1:29 pm

Books not Bombs! Hell yeah! Let’s wage peace on other countries! And thank goodness we have a new administration!

I don’t understand the comment by DAVE…”these people are making a living figuring a way to kill.” Which people are you talking about? Blackwater? KBR? The current sucky administration? The military industrial complex? So many people making a living by killing others…. I agree with evildoer about the Three Cups of Tea. Evildoer…you sound like a coworker…are you?

and thank you for my standing ovation this morning coworkers…I love you guys! (I thought it was because I arrived at work on time) LOL

  17. dawngirl January 10, 2009 7:17 pm

Here’s one for you: since downcycling (as opposed to recycling) plastic is a bad idea, not to mention the nasty chemicals & petroleum plastic is made from, let’s promote hemp to replace plastic! Let’s subsidize the hell out of hemp farmers from here to Afghanistan. If they can make more growing hemp than poppies, they’ll jump at the chance, no?

  18. spudgirl January 11, 2009 1:03 am

I have been telling people for the past 8 years……Since Bush has been blaming Clinton for all of the mistakes that he inherited, why hasn’t W. bothered to fix any of them? The answer: It wasn’t on the Cheney agenda.

  19. Karen January 11, 2009 10:14 am

It’s important to be able to vent, and the complaints are (emphatically) legitimate. (Check out Maureen Dowd’s column in today’s NYT).

However, one of the early & best outcomes of the change in administrations Jan 20 could be what has largely appeared to have happened to Rumsfeld already. Disappearance. Silence. No role. No power. No say. Obscurity. No further opportunity to do damage and wreak havoc.

An opportunity for the good guys to do good. With relative competence, integrity, and truthfulness.

    What a concept!
