My house just shook.

Actually, it happened at 9:15:35 p.m. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was centered 8 miles northeast of Alpine, 3 miles below the earth’s surface. The epicenter appears to be really close to the Snake River — I’m estimating about Gaging Strait Lunch Counter.

Umm, I hope somebody is checking on Palisades Dam.

OK, here’s the latest report from the USGS. Keep in mind that a lot of these seismograph machines and monitoring systems are fully automated, so initial data can be revised when a person actually checks the instruments.

Looks like the earthquake has been downgraded to 3.7. The USGS has deleted its earlier report of a nearly simultaneous temblor near the Utah-Nevada border, so perhaps this one was felt that far away.

  • Version #8: This report supersedes any earlier reports of this event.
This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.
  • A minor earthquake occurred at 9:15:35 PM (MST) on Thursday, January 15, 2009.
  • The magnitude 3.7 event occurred 12 km (8 miles) SW of Hoback, WY.
  • The hypocentral depth is 5 km ( 3 miles).

Eight miles southwest of Hoback … that’s closer to West Table.

Apparently the quake shook up my brain and I can’t quite recall exactly my Snake River Canyon geography.

I just looked at a topo map with the precise location (at least according to this USGS preliminary report #8), and the epicenter was up Wolf Creek.

Also, Lauren Whaley has a funny firsthand account of what it was like to experience this quake, replete with Mary Poppins reference.

Shouldn’t you vet this “reporting” with several eyewitnesses, have it proofread, and wait two days before posting? Otherwise, you might have to issue a correction, and I hear that’s serious stuff.

Just asking. And it shook at my house in the Junction too.

    ha ha.

my whole house shook one way, then the other.

wine glass, plant leaves, lamp — all quaked for a second or two.

there was a boom, and it felt like something had just plowed into the house.
