free keg — oh, and some art

It's hard to fathom that July Fourth already is here, but might as well celebrate with a bang.

In this rain-soaked year, it's hard to fathom that July Fourth already is here, but might as well celebrate with a bang. LMC starts the festivities tonight.

Thirsty to kick off Fourth of July (!) weekend?

JH Underground is sponsoring the beer at tonight’s First Friday opening at Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary. The gallery will be pouring a keg of Snake River Brewing Co.’s OB-1 from 5 to 8 p.m. or so.

Matt Flint, an artist from Lander, is displaying a series of small paintings priced at $199. (One of his larger mixed-media pieces sells for $3,000.) The show is called “Simple Things for Complex Times.”

Jenny Dowd, last month’s featured artist, is offering her sculpted hanging baskets and object drawers for as little as $25 to $100 per piece. Anomaly Farm and Raskolink will be on hand with hoodies and tees, and patrons can snaz up their cruisers with streamers for the Flutter Tunnel.

Reports of LMC’s demise have been somewhat overstated. The modern art showcase is evolving into a collective, as beginning next Saturday creative types will be selling their wares in an “Artists’ Market” following the Farmers’ Market on the Town Square.

Earlier this year, a commenter on the Planet JH Weekly web site nailed the First Friday scene as a magnet for “shallow hipsters and fashionistas” who, you know, don’t buy any art.

That this “bunch of posers leeching free booze” has coalesced around art may yet pay dividends; one day our rafting clients, restaurant diners or hotel guests will discover LMC and swoop in to invest in one of Dan Burgette’s exquisite sculptures. Until then, we will make do with simple things.

Hey, blogging is art, too.
