This time, it’s The Goonies, sponsored by Teton Artlab and Fitzgerald’s Bicycles, among others.

Last showing got moved inside because of weather. Tonight looks more promising.

picking and grinning

We won’t have to bring our skis to the ‘Ghee this weekend; this is the first Saturday in three weeks with no snow in the forecast.

Rather, it will feel good to get up to 8,000 feet and cool down. Only the music will be scorching.

Tonight there’s going to be a serious hoedown when Railroad Earth takes the stage at the base of Fred’s Mountain. This jamgrass band from back East has quietly built a following through word of mouth and shared live recordings.

Shorty goes long at Music on Main

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue came marching into Driggs last week and threw down some thumping funk at Music on Main.

Afterward, he talked about what makes New Orleans music so much fun to dance to, as well as the challenge of playing at high altitude.

Don’t be fooled by his “party all the time” line; this 23-year-old brass player is a consummate professional, more apt to give an erudite critique of a Louis Armstrong composition than talk smack about the Saints.

Gettin' it: The prez tries his hand at fly fishing in Montana.

Well, the angler-in-chief probably did better with a fly rod than most mountain men would do on the basketball courts of Chicago.

President Obama was not dissuaded by cold rain Friday as he plied the waters of the East Gallatin River near Bozeman. Making good on a campaign pledge to learn to fly fish, he hooked a half-dozen trout but didn’t land any.

Welcome to the new ice age.

This is the view from Moose this morning, as the snow line was at about 7,000 feet on the flanks of Teewinot, Mount St. John and Mount Moran.

Back-to-back weekends of snow in August, which is cause for celebration if you’re this guy or these guys. But some of the rest of us are cringing.

I asked Dick Barker, who has been floating the Snake since the 1950s, if he had ever seen a summer like this one. “No,” he said, flatly.

At this rate we should be skiing by Oct. 1.
