Ski season slowly is looking up. Three weeks after opening, Grand Targhee will begin operating its Dreamcatcher high-speed quad on Saturday. The lift provides access to the 9,862-foot summit of Fred’s Mountain.

Because I only know the names of two runs off Dreamcatcher, “right” and “left,” I will not attempt to explain which trails will be open. For a list, click here. Targhee issued a stern warning for riders to stay out of closed areas:

“We remind our guests to respect all closed areas and advise those who are tempted to access closed areas that risk of damage to themselves and their equipment is high, and consequences will be swift, serious and season-long.”

The timing couldn’t be better, as an approaching storm could bring a foot of snow to the Tetons by Monday. (And finally snap us out of this deep freeze.)

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort does not plan to open additional terrain at this time. Snow King will be closed Friday and Saturday for races, as the thin lane of man-made snow cannot accommodate a giant slalom course and the public.

(Update 12/15: JHMR will open Bridger Gondola on Dec. 17 and Casper chair Dec. 18. Targhee opened its Blackfoot lift Dec. 14.)
