Opening day of the gondola at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
The valley hasn’t exactly been abuzz about the skiing of late, what with the thaw and a quiet forecast for snowfall.
But it’s funny how pleasantly surprised you can be by keeping your expectations low and taking what nature gives you.
I got my first turns of the season yesterday evening and this morning on the King. Soft snow, smooth, plenty of options for hiking. Feels good to be back on the boards!
* Update 12/18: In a bit of a surprise move, the resort is planning to open the Aerial Tram and Thunder and Sublette chairs on Saturday. That means lift tickets will be full price, $91. A resort employee warns that skiers and snowboarders should exercise extreme caution, as light powder sits atop rock.
