Finally, the fireworks Spread Heads have been waiting for.

Ending months of speculation, Widespread Panic has decided to play The Spud in Teton Valley, Idaho, on July 4th. Tickets go on sale Friday for an early-bird price of $36.50, available at Tobacco Row in Jackson, Big Hole Music in Driggs and the Knotty Pine in Victor.

The show is being co-presented by Poppa Presents and Silvertag Live. The band had received various offers to play at Snow King and Grand Targhee before settling on The Spud, a historic drive-in theater that Poppa Presents turned into a live music venue last summer. The venue has a capacity of 4,000 for concerts.

Poppa Presents, headed by promoter Dom Gagliardi, also is putting on Rhythm Devils on July 24 and Big Head Todd and the Monsters on July 25 at The Spud. Discount tickets for $32.50 are available through May 31, and a package for all three events will be offered online.

The July 4th celebration is Widespread’s first show in the Teton area in four years. The Southern rockers from Athens, Ga., played outdoors at the base of Snow King in 2005 and ’06, after many gigs in the Snow King ice rink and ballroom and even the Mangy Moose stretching back to 1992.

The band has been on a roll this spring, and its latest album, Dirty Side Down, is due out tomorrow.

Is it still 1999? Oh, I see Big Head Todd has also been booked, so, yeah, it must still be ’99.

  6. hk May 25, 2010 12:35 pm

Just need Dave Matthews to show up and it’ll be a party…

  7. D May 25, 2010 12:56 pm

I love it bitch about no music then bitch about what kind or who.

  8. randosteve May 25, 2010 5:15 pm

meh…call me when they book pearl jam. there are enough rock-a-billy bands that play in this area already.

  9. FuCk dA HaTeRz May 26, 2010 2:41 am

I ‘meh’ in randosteve’s general direction.

and 1999? Try 1986 – the year both Wide Spread Panic and Big Head Todd formed.

Pointing out that these bands are irrelevant is too easy, and simply not true. Given the demographic of unsophisticated, dated and out-of-touch music fans in this region (see randosteve sweating pearl jam) both of these shows and the Rhythm Devils show will be successful.

And even if you are well beyond these bands, chances are you’re going to wind up at one of these shows, anyway, because your hippie friends are going.

    Here are some likely outcomes.

If you choose panic, you will do an excessive amount of drugs, make a bandanna out of your t-shirt, loose one flip flop on the way to the port-o-john, slip on a pool of vomit and stab yourself with a glow stick and die.

If you choose Big Head Todd, you will sway with a 38-year-old single-mom from Victor who you used to date back in the day but haven’t seen in five years. Everything will be great. She has a house now with an organic garden and manages to ski and raft still. But then her baby’s daddy will show up and ruin the vibe and she’ll remember the baby-sitter is charging by the hour and will have to leave. But that’s ok, because you will woo a 23-year-old six (five) later on.

As for the Rhythm Devils? It’ll be a bunch of dudes wearing Grateful Dead t-shirts having a good time.

Don’t forget Henry Rollins, Taj Mahal, Herbie Hancock and Willie Nelson, too.

    I can’t wait for summer.

    @ FuCk dA HaTeRz: +2

Anyone who’s spent any time around the Widespread scene should probably recognize the references of my commenter name. But these days it’s just an ironic moniker.

I’ve seen exactly 50 WP shows in my life. I live in Jackson and plan to be around on July 4, but I’m not sure if I care to see a 51st show. Plus I think last night I dreamt they played “Tall Boy,” and it was just too much bear.

Having said that: “I’m feeling weak! in the Itta Bena hot sun…”

The only way a panic show could be worse is if Dave Matthews opened up for them! Just thinking about being around all the stinky southern hippies gives me a PANIC attack!

gotta love the hate. cant wait for the 4th.

  14. Greg May 27, 2010 10:17 am

anybody know how many people the spud holds?

  15. Greg May 27, 2010 10:18 am

nevermind, just reread the post and it’s right there. sorry.

lotta haters, no suggestions aside from pearl jam and reference to other shows already coming to the area. I’m sure there are promoters checking out these comments, so if you’re bitchin, offer up some better ideas. i think, and I know Jim will second this emotion, My Morning Jacket would be a killer show for the spud that is along the same scale as panic.

jp man you just don’t get it. You have to hate or be to cool for all music that anyone else likes or knows about. You are just not cutting edge man try setting Jam Base as your home page. That way you can know all the new bands while you talk about how many times you have seen the ones everyone else still enjoys. For example: I’ve seen exactly 50 WP shows in my life. I live in Jackson and plan to be around on July 4, but I’m not sure if I care to see a 51st show. Plus I think last night I dreamt they played “Tall Boy,” and it was just too much bear.” See this guy has got it hidden gems every where. Don’t worry man I am not cool either, I mean I still like phish for crying out loud. Talk about living in the 90’s.

Is anyone in that valley ever happy about anything?? You bitch because ther are no restaurants/night life but protest when someone wants to open a new place. You bitch and moan about the tourists, traffic, development…anything that would help the valley along. Someone buys the spud has the nerve to update it and try to attract large music acts and your still not happy. The valley is depressed….ANYTHING that will bring traffic into it would be a good thing. Every business within a few miles will feel the benefits of a national act coming to town. Sounthern hippies?? Have you looked around town…half of the population could be confused for a dirty hippie. I guarantee this concert will be jam packed and will most likely be the biggest event of the season. Regardless of your music tastes this is a huge deal for the valley. BIG PICTURE!!
