J-List gets makeover

Starting with hip-hop shows tonight (Knotty) and tomorrow (Cowboy Bar) by Brother Ali, there is one last slate of events planned for closing weekend at JHMR before the off-season becomes, officially, dead.

Helping keep tabs on the festivities, as well as other goings-on around town, is the newly redesigned J-List. Sometimes imitated but never replicated, the site is free and easy to use, whether you’re browsing events or listing them.

A lot of folks send me press releases and “calendar”-type submissions for their events, but the point of The-J-List is that you can list them yourself. I often enter the information for cool shows and important meetings, but as the off-season drags on and travels beckon, I will be less reliable.

The savvy programmers at The-J-List are responsible for the new widget on the left side of this page, which, as you may have noticed, lists a selection of events I have “hearted.” Another new feature is a better location page, with improved Google map. That way, if you’re trying to find a gallery or bar on your phone, J-List can help guide you.

The site is handy for sporting events, art openings, concerts and fund-raisers. Look for more new features to come soon.

Targhee is one of the featured gigs of the summer.

The venue sits at 8,000 feet.

Everyone is trying to get to the bar … the name of the bar? … the bar is called Targhee!

It’s official: Widespread Panic is returning to the Tetons this summer and will reward fans with the ultimate gig — three nights of music at Wyoming’s Grand Targhee.

In an announcement that had been anticipated for weeks, Panic will play July 1-3 at the base of Fred’s Mountain. The shows are one of the highlights of the band’s 25th anniversary tour and come on the heels of a similar stint at Red Rocks.

Tickets will go on sale April 1 for $41 per day or $99 for a weekend pass. Click here for tickets and call (800) TAR-GHEE for lodging reservations and camping passes.

This is the first time Widespread Panic ever has played a three-night run in the Jackson Hole area.

PPP results online

By Jim Stanford on March 28, 2011

Spencer Morton

The Jackson Hole Ski Club has posted overall and leg-by-leg results from Saturday’s 36th annual Pole Pedal Paddle.

Spencer Morton was the fastest individual racer, completing the 4,139-vertical-foot downhill, 7-k skate ski, 20-mile bike and 10-mile paddle in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 31 seconds. Anna-Lisette Davis was the fastest woman, with a time of 2 hours, 43 minutes.

Conditions were pretty good for the PPP, especially considering the wintry weather leading up to the event. The nordic course was longer than last year, and there was a fairly stiff headwind on the bike. But boaters were helped by more water flowing in the Snake River.

Even though the morning was cold, paddlers got not just a whiff of sulfur as they churned toward the finish at Astoria Hot Springs. With a flotilla of boats in the eddy and racers celebrating in the sunshine, there also was a faint hint of spring in the air.

And effort on the fourth “P” — party — was as strong as ever, with a spirited crowd for Katchafire and The Deadlocks and an outdoor hot tub party at one Teton Village hotel that had to be cleared by a sheriff’s deputy at 3:30 a.m.

Congratulations to all the competitors on some impressive times and for keeping alive one of the greatest traditions in Jackson Hole.

Mountain Fest: the lowdown

By Jim Stanford on March 25, 2011

Athletes and music fans are gearing up for a festive weekend, starting Saturday morning with the Pole Pedal Powder. There are a lot of events to keep track of, so here’s a summary:

  • PPP starts at 8 a.m. P-P-Participants must pick up bibs between 4 and 5:45 p.m. and attend pre-race meeting today, which begins at 6 in the events tent at JHMR. No word yet on how deep the alpine course will be.
  • Music Under the Tram: The Foundation plays New Orleans-style funk and rock from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
  • Rotating Superstructure plays an opening set on the main stage, in the front parking lot, starting at approximately 5:15 p.m. The indie pop-rockers, who grew up in Jackson, return from Portland.
  • Katchafire, the Maori reggae band from New Zealand, performs a free concert from 6:30 to 8:45. That leaves plenty of time for tailgating! Let’s hope the band got good directions this time. Fireworks to follow.
  • The Deadlocks take the festivities Furthur at the Mangy Moose, starting around 9:15. $10 at the door, or $8 in advance online. We’re giving away a pair of free tickets — in the comments below, say you’re in, and the winner will be chosen by random drawing at 3 p.m. Saturday.

As if that isn’t exhausting enough, the festival continues Sunday.

it has been this kind of a season

Did I write something about spring the other day? Snow melting?

It sure felt like I paid for it yesterday, lashed by winds and driving snow on a hike more evocative of January than March. Cold, with snowfall rates of up to three inches per hour. Skiers reaped face shots of radioactive powder.

Avid snow statistician (and “Future Primitive” DJ) Eric Balog reported Monday that of the 115 days Jackson Hole Mountain Resort had been open this season, it recorded new snow on 87 of them. Updating that stat with the 28 inches that fell since then, including yesterday’s whopping 22 inches, the resort has reported snow 89 of 117 days, or 76 percent.

No wonder the seasonal disorder affected among us are fleeing to the desert.

electeds pick 7 for lodging tax board

By Jim Stanford on March 22, 2011

Aaron Pruzan

Spring break is almost here, so the town council and county commissioners went ahead today and picked the seven people to serve on the Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board.

Unanimously approved were: Ponteir Sackrey and Jeff Golightly to one-year terms, Bruce Grosbety and Chip Carey to two-year terms and Candra Day, Stephen Price and Aaron Pruzan to three-year terms.

The board will oversee the spending of a projected $2 million per year to promote travel and tourism, specifically promotional materials, advertising, promotion of tours and other “tourism-related objectives,” which leaves a lot of room for interpretation. (State statute governing the board was written before the Internet, for instance.)
