Ben Ellman blows the roof off during Galactic's last trip to Victor.

Ye Olde Knotty Pine Supper Club in Victor, Idaho, will serve up the biggest music show of the winter (booked so far), when Galactic visits on March 20.

The New Orleans troupe detonated a neutron bomb of rock and funk grooves on its last visit to the Knotty in 2009. This time the group will feature vocalist Corey Glover (of Living Colour) along with trombonist Corey Henry.

Tickets are available via Galactic’s website for $35, plus a $6 service fee. Fans can avoid the fee by purchasing directly through the Knotty beginning Tuesday.

A quick glance at Pollstar reveals some of the other shows in store for Jackson Hole this winter: The Infamous Stringdusters on Jan. 24 and Leftover Salmon on Feb. 29, both at the Pink Garter; Pert’ Near Sandstone at Q on Dec. 10; and Head for the Hills on Feb. 19 at the Mangy Moose. 307 Live‘s upcoming slate at the Town Square Tavern features Devon Allman’s Honeytribe on Jan. 13 and Jason Isbell (formerly of Drive-By Truckers) and The 400 Unit on Jan. 14.

Galactic has a new album, the star-studded Carnivale Electricos, due out Mardi Gras Day. Click here to listen to a free track on Soundcloud, featuring guest artists David Shaw and Maggie Koerner.

Flaming Gorge pipe dream taxpayers’ nightmare

By Jim Stanford on November 28, 2011

Flaming Gorge Reservoir in southwest Wyoming. Click to enlarge.

Apparently unaware that Wyoming legislators can make it rain (or snow) by pumping $14 million into cloud seeding, Colorado businessman Aaron Million is pressing ahead with his proposal to pump water some 500 miles from Flaming Gorge Reservoir over the Continental Divide to Colorado’s Front Range.

In a bit of procedural sleight of hand, Million has shifted his application from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, now claiming the project will produce hydropower. In doing so he seeks whichever federal agency is most likely to give the plan a favorable review.

Former Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal opposed the pipeline, as does his successor, Gov. Matt Mead. Sportsmen from southern Wyoming and northern Utah also have ridiculed the plan, which would divert 250,000 acre feet of water — or about 30 percent of the storage capacity of Jackson Lake, for a comparison — from the Green River Basin each year, into the eastbound Platte Basin.

The staggering price tag — $3 billion by Million’s estimation, up to $9 billion by other projections — regulatory hurdles and widespread doubts make it unlikely the pipeline ever will be built. But we never can be too vigilant, so click here to submit an eComment to FERC. The docket number for the Flaming Gorge Pipeline is P-14263, and the deadline is Dec. 16.

Last we left off with filmmaker Jen Tennican, she had embarked on a documentary about the Stagecoach Bar in Wilson, using the cherished watering hole as a prism to view 70 years of Western history.

Since then she won the Wyoming Short Film Contest with a spinoff comedy and netted $25,000 for the project. Now, nearing her fund-raising goal, she has received a $5,000 grant from a local foundation and is appealing to us, the masses on the Interwebs, to match.

Cow elk deceased in vicinity.

Teton County authorities recovered the body of a man found dead today above Cache Creek.

Hunters discovered the body this morning in a draw west of Woods Canyon, a sheriff’s deputy said. The body had been up there at least several days, possibly a week. No foul play is suspected, the deputy said.

The man was from out of town. Teton County law enforcement and searchers set up a base camp at the mouth of Cache Creek during the recovery.

With several feet of snow falling this week, elk have been moving toward the National Elk Refuge, and hunters have had some success on adjacent Crystal Butte. The steep Woods Canyon trail climbs to the top of the butte.

The sheriff’s office is expected to issue a press release with more information.

French singer loves him some Tetons

By Jim Stanford on November 16, 2011

Meet Christophe Maé, a French musician twice named male singer of the year, with four hit albums and two No. 1 songs to his credit.

With a cry of “Allons” (Let’s go), Maé has given our corner of Wyoming tremendous exposure in France. He filmed his latest music video entirely in Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park and somehow managed to get a couch aboard a floating dock on Jenny Lake.

Because je parle seulement un peu de français, much of Maé’s lyrics are lost in translation. He sings about the blues, and his hunger, and what he would like.
