surfing for summits

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

David Stubbs reaches the 12,165-foot summit of Teewinot Peak in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, on Labor Day 2007.

I’ve added a link to the new Jenny Lake climbing ranger site, where mountaineers can get updates on popular climbing and hiking routes in the Tetons. There’s also a lot of information about backcountry camping in the park. (Alas, no permits online.)

DG at The Snaz has the scoop.

Hard to believe we’re a week past the Fourth of July, and still so much snow in the mountains. Won’t be long before it begins piling up again.

I’m holding onto summer as long as I can.

In papers filed Friday in 9th Circuit Court in Jackson, DeBoer was charged with three counts of reckless endangering and one count of reckless driving for allegedly buzzing three mountain bike riders with his truck on July 1, 2006.

DeBoer was on probation at the time for a previous conflict in the Game Creek area. The charges, all misdemeanors, carry a maximum penalty of three and a half years in prison and a fine of $750.

DeBoer rides free, for now

the Ichabod Crane of Game Creek, and his lawyer
Trail-riding vigilante: DeBoer, right, with attorney Bob Horn

Game Creek Horseman of the Apocalypse Paul DeBoer escaped jail time and left the courthouse smiling Wednesday, after Judge Tim Day gave him another free pass for a run-in on the trail.

But DeBoer may not be smiling for long. Deputy County Prosecutor Brian Hultman is weighing whether to press charges for a more serious offense.

This time, the self-appointed marshal of trail justice who has railed against mountain bikers and dogs may find himself in deep doo-doo.
