Michael Franti and Spearhead are coming back around the way, playing the free Jackson Hole Mountain Festival concert on March 29.

Happy new year!

Musically, 2014 is off to a great start, with the likes of Del McCoury and MarchFourth Marching Band ushering in the year on a festive note.

And the schedule for the winter has been filling out, giving fans much to look forward to — including return visits from local favorites.

The Knotty Pine recently announced a couple of big shows, including Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe on Feb. 20 and, in what has become an annual tradition, Galactic on March 11. Tickets are $25 and $40, respectively, available online.

Leftover Salmon will play shows on both sides of the Tetons during a Western ski tour: the Pink Garter on March 13 and Knotty on March 14.

The Garter also has reggae legends Black Uhuru on Valentine’s Day, Pimps of Joytime on Feb. 25 and crooner Martin Sexton on March 20. Tickets are $26, $17 and $25 in advance at the theater and Pinky G’s.

Galactic, Hot Tuna headed back to Tetons

In what is fast becoming a winter tradition, the NOLA funk band Galactic will return to play the Knotty Pine on Feb. 20. This will be the group’s third visit to Victor, Idaho, in the last four years. Tickets are $35 and available now on the Galactic website, but go on sale Friday at the Knotty without a service fee.

Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover, featured above, again will accompany the band. Knotty Pine owner Brice Nelson called Galactic’s last visit in March “one of the best nights of music in our 17 years.”

The show is part of the “Freeze Out Tour” that will take Galactic from Mardi Gras in New Orleans across the West to The Fillmore in San Francisco.

The Pink Garter Theater in Jackson also has been fleshing out its winter schedule, with Hot Tuna — the acoustic duo of Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady — on Feb. 15 and slamgrass jammers Leftover Salmon on March 3. Tickets for Hot Tuna go on sale at noon Friday for $35.

The Pink Garter also will host a New Year’s Eve Funkathon with the Colorado rock band Fox Street Allstars for $15.

Jazz Fest comes to Victor

By Jim Stanford on March 20, 2012

Galactic arrived in Teton Valley to a spring snowstorm yesterday and enjoyed a day off. “Hanging in lovely cold Victor ID,” the band Tweeted.

Things will get considerably warmer tonight when the New Orleans funk ensemble takes the stage for a sold-out show at the Knotty Pine. The log cabin club will resemble a sauna straight out of Frenchmen Street in the Big Easy.

With an extra day of rest, band members could ride some of the nearly 2 feet of powder that has blanketed the Tetons, or delve into the Kansas City barbecue served by Knotty Pine owner Brice Nelson — “the best food we’ve ever eaten at a venue,” saxophonist Ben Ellman proclaimed during the group’s last visit in 2009.

Either way, the band is likely to come out roaring. On this tour Galactic again is joined by trombonist Corey Henry, along with singer Corey Glover, former frontman for Living Colour. The group just released a new album on Mardi Gras Day, Carnivale Electricos, featuring a host of guest musicians.

Jazz Fest beckons; Pink Garter stirs

Corey Henry surfs the crowd while performing with Galactic at Jazz Fest 2009.

With four Jacksonites recently relocating to New Orleans, including KHOL co-music director Kelly Huster, the Jackson Hole contingent at Jazz Fest is likely to be even larger this year.

Last night the festival announced its preliminary lineup, featuring the likes of Bon Iver, MMJ, Iron and Wine, Herbie Hancock, Zac Brown Band, and Levon Helm with Mavis Staples. Grace Potter makes her Jazz Fest debut.

Although not held until late April and early May, Jazz Fest sets its lineup early to get the jump on other festivals. Best to plan ahead, as flights will fill up and, you know, Kelly’s couch is likely to be booked.

Closer to home, the Pink Garter is preparing for a grand reopening. While construction is ongoing, the theater will host The Deadlocks for three sets on New Year’s Eve ($15). As reported earlier, The Infamous Stringdusters and Leftover Salmon are among the bands who will play this winter.

Galactic to return to Knotty Pine

By Jim Stanford on November 30, 2011

Ben Ellman blows the roof off during Galactic's last trip to Victor.

Ye Olde Knotty Pine Supper Club in Victor, Idaho, will serve up the biggest music show of the winter (booked so far), when Galactic visits on March 20.

The New Orleans troupe detonated a neutron bomb of rock and funk grooves on its last visit to the Knotty in 2009. This time the group will feature vocalist Corey Glover (of Living Colour) along with trombonist Corey Henry.

Tickets are available via Galactic’s website for $35, plus a $6 service fee. Fans can avoid the fee by purchasing directly through the Knotty beginning Tuesday.

A quick glance at Pollstar reveals some of the other shows in store for Jackson Hole this winter: The Infamous Stringdusters on Jan. 24 and Leftover Salmon on Feb. 29, both at the Pink Garter; Pert’ Near Sandstone at Q on Dec. 10; and Head for the Hills on Feb. 19 at the Mangy Moose. 307 Live‘s upcoming slate at the Town Square Tavern features Devon Allman’s Honeytribe on Jan. 13 and Jason Isbell (formerly of Drive-By Truckers) and The 400 Unit on Jan. 14.

Galactic has a new album, the star-studded Carnivale Electricos, due out Mardi Gras Day. Click here to listen to a free track on Soundcloud, featuring guest artists David Shaw and Maggie Koerner.
