From his roots on Long Island, rapper Chuck D emerged in the 1980s as a musical star and champion of social justice.

Believe the hype: Jackson is about to get a major infusion of hip-hop next month, headlined by Chuck D and Public Enemy.

The Pink Garter Theater presents the Hip Hop Gods Classic Tourfest on Sunday, Dec. 9. The James Brown-style rolling revue will feature Public Enemy, nominated this year for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a rotating cast that includes X-Clan, Monie Love, Schoolly D, Leaders Of The New School, Wise Intelligent from Poor Righteous Teachers, Son Of Bazerk & No Self Control, Awesome Dre, Davy DMX and DJ Johnny Juice.

Band of Horses roams Antelope Flats

The musicians from Band of Horses weren’t exactly Shut-In Tourists on their visit to Jackson Hole earlier this summer.

As Aaron Davis reported last week, the group stretched out in Jackson prior to performing at the Pink Garter on July 31. The rockers rehearsed at the theater for three days and enjoyed an off day before joining My Morning Jacket on tour.

The band’s time here bore fruit, as evidenced by the above video of “Slow Cruel Hands of Time,” a track from the latest album, Mirage Rock. Fans also can listen on Spotify to a live version of “Knock Knock,” the lead single from the album, recorded at the Pink Garter (see video after the jump).

While working their new songs into shape, the players ventured into Teton park to strum in the sagebrush. Was there a Ghost on Mormon Row?

Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses performs at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz Fest.

Is there a ghost in the Pink Garter? Music fans will find out July 31 when Band of Horses performs at the downtown Jackson theater.

The show is the biggest yet for the Pink Garter. Tickets go on sale at noon today and likely won’t last long. Purchase them at the theater/Pinky G’s or online.

Band of Horses has been touring this summer with My Morning Jacket and will stop in Jackson between shows in Salt Lake City and Red Rocks. The group formed in Seattle but has roots in South Carolina. The indie rockers scored a pair of pop hits in 2007 with the songs “Is There a Ghost” and “No One’s Gonna Love You” from the album Cease to Begin.

The band plans to release its fourth studio album, Mirage Rock, in September.

Robert Randolph at the Knotty Pine in 2002. Randolph and his Family Band return to play gospel-infused funk and rock Aug. 26 at Snow King.

Jackson is getting its own version of Music on Main this summer.

After years of talk by various promoters, the new operators of the Snow King Center rink have organized a free concert series similar to the outdoor shows that have been a hit in Teton Valley, Idaho.

Here’s the schedule, with a sixth event yet to come:

Saturday, June 23 — The Dunwells
Saturday, July 7 — Boom Chick
Wednesday, July 25 — Justin Townes Earle
Wednesday, Aug. 5 — The Features
Sunday, Aug. 26 — Robert Randolph and the Family Band

Local bands will open. Beer and food concessions and sponsorships will pay for the music, and any remaining proceeds will go to youth hockey and skating programs at the rink. The shows are open to all ages.

The biggest name on the slate is Randolph, who first played the Teton area at the Knotty Pine in 2002. Since then the pedal steel player has returned to open for the Black Crowes in 2006 and play the Jackson Hole Music Festival in 2008.
