Jazz Fest beckons; Pink Garter stirs

Corey Henry surfs the crowd while performing with Galactic at Jazz Fest 2009.

With four Jacksonites recently relocating to New Orleans, including KHOL co-music director Kelly Huster, the Jackson Hole contingent at Jazz Fest is likely to be even larger this year.

Last night the festival announced its preliminary lineup, featuring the likes of Bon Iver, MMJ, Iron and Wine, Herbie Hancock, Zac Brown Band, and Levon Helm with Mavis Staples. Grace Potter makes her Jazz Fest debut.

Although not held until late April and early May, Jazz Fest sets its lineup early to get the jump on other festivals. Best to plan ahead, as flights will fill up and, you know, Kelly’s couch is likely to be booked.

Closer to home, the Pink Garter is preparing for a grand reopening. While construction is ongoing, the theater will host The Deadlocks for three sets on New Year’s Eve ($15). As reported earlier, The Infamous Stringdusters and Leftover Salmon are among the bands who will play this winter.

Music news to provide some cheer on yet another soggy afternoon:

Still hot: Wanda Jackson's collaboration with Jack White has added to her legend.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort again has teamed with Teton Village businesses to host a second season of Concerts on the Commons. The free series will be on Sunday afternoons beginning July 17. Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson is among the headliners.

Jackie Greene will spend a little more time on the mountain. The guitarist, singer and former Grateful Dead apprentice will return to perform at Targhee Fest on July 16.

Music on Main kicks off its free Thursday night concert series on June 30. Volunteer for a host of perks, including a Targhee ski pass upgrade and chance to win a cruiser bike. A $40 donation nets quick entry and beverages for the entire season.

Also, What’s Good Here? Productions has finalized its summer calendar.

waiting for a miracle? free tickets to JGB

By Jim Stanford on March 18, 2011

One of the pleasant surprises at Targhee Fest last year was an early evening set by Melvin Seals and JGB.

Seals, the soul keyboardist and former bandmate of Jerry Garcia, squeezed melodies from his organ as colorful as the sunset over Teton Valley. And guitarist Stu Allen, whose vocals and guitar tone were uncanny in homage, brought the spirit of Garcia to the mountainside. JGB had the crowd boogieing to the R&B covers, infused with jazz and a touch of gospel, that distinguished Garcia’s side band from his psychedelic rock with the Dead.

Keeping the flame alive, Seals brings his troupe to the Timberline in Victor on Saturday, and we’re giving away two tickets ($40 value), courtesy of What’s Good Here? Productions. In the comments below, say you’re in, and a random drawing will decide the winner at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Fox Street Allstars will open. In the comments below, say you’re in, and at 5 p.m. a random drawing will decide the lucky winner.

New Mastersounds are frequent visitors to Jackson Hole. The fab funksters from Leeds, England, first performed in the area in 2008, at the Knotty Pine, and since have played the Mangy Moose, Music on Main and Pink Garter. Led by guitarist Eddie Roberts, the group relies on a stripped-down, retro sound.

The video features the band performing “Chocolate Chip” last month in Madrid with guest Chip Wickham on flute.

This show may sell out. Tickets are available at the What’s Good Here? website.
